Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Taita Taveta National Polytechnic. We started our journey in the year of 2012. Over the past seven years, we have grown our expertise and competence in the skill-based training in the areas of Mechanical production, automotive, mechanical plant and mechatronics.
We have strong Diploma programs in Mechanical engineering, including Automotive engineering, Mechanical Plant Engineering, Welding and Fabrication and CBET course in Mechatronics Engineering. At the certificate level, we offer Craft certificate in Automotive and Mechatronics level 5. Our courses are examined by KNEC, internal and CDACC. At present, the department has close to 200 trainees enrolled to our various programs.
Our department offers skills-based engineering curriculum. The primary focus of our curriculum is to impart technical know-how to trainees, promote their problem-solving skills and innovation of new technologies. The department offers large number of interdisciplinary courses for providing cross cutting knowledge to the students to pursue their interest. The course contents are periodically updated for introducing new scientific and technological developments. All our trainees are encouraged to undertake various research projects and encouraged to spend time in industries.
Our department maintains active research groups for carrying out collaborative and interdisciplinary research. We have state of the art training facilities to support our academic programs and research in the areas of Mechatronics, robotics, Automobile equipment and welding and fabrication equipment.
Our department has a distinguished record in both teaching and innovations. The departmental trainers have excellent academic credentials and are highly regarded.
Our department looks forward to contribute in solving the technological challenges of the society with active participation from all sections of the society. For instance, during the period of COVID-19 Pandemic, the department contributed immensely in the fight against COVID-19 through a collaboration with the County Government of Taita Taveta to fabricate 240 hospital care beds to raise the bed capacity in the county’s public hospitals. Our department also fabricated foot operated hand washing systems to contribute to the fight against COVID-19.
